Hong Kong Shopping + Thrillography Goes to Hong Kong Disneyland (Day 2) : My Fabulous Far East Trip Report - Part II

Good morning, everyone!

Is anyone else still floating on air after our first day together at Hong Kong Disneyland? :}

We've got a two-for-one update here at Thrillography, with a fascinating culture day in some of Hong Kong's most remarkable markets followed by a GIANT second day at the Happiest Place in Hong Kong, where we'll see some new parades, make some new friends, and ride some new rides!

Pretty sweet, right? :D

Our morning begins in the candy corner of Kaitlin's local 7-11.

Had to snag one of these for my brother-in-law, the Oreo cookie enthusiast!

I made these charming fish my first gummy snack of the trip. :}

Have you ever seen anything so cute?

Next stop: Kaitlin's local mall!

While Hong Kong is full of "western" style malls with large stores and open corridors that resemble those of malls in the U.S., more traditional malls in the area are essentially indoor markets, featuring all manner of goods packed tight into compact store fronts.

And here's where my heart stopped: THE GUMMY STORE!

What the gummy store lacks in space they more than make up for in selection. Not one spec of space is wasted.

Popular are these make-your-own kits, featuring everything from candy mushrooms to mini pizza feasts! Seems fairly straight-forward, right?

Wrong!

Across from the gummy shop is the game store, which we'll be visiting again once it's open for business. :}

Here we have a fancy restaurant where everything in the aquarium is also on the menu!

Quick stop at the post office. :}

I wish post offices in the U.S. were as quick and painless as they are here.

In this region, every scrap of space matters. Anywhere in Hong Kong with enough room to display merchandise is enough room for a storefront.

While some markets are in large, multi-story buildings, others are sprawling, open-air warehouse-like spaces.

These open-air markets are where you'll find fake handbags for sale in one shop, and live ingredients for sale right next door!

Also popular in these markets are aquarium stores, where fish, critters, and plants of all shapes and sizes are ready to add some feng-shui to your home!

This isn't your local Petsmart! At the markets, even the aquarium stores are low on space, relegating the fish to rather small holding tanks. Fortunately, turnover in a place like this is such that the fish don't have to live in these cramped quarters for long. :}

Likewise, the plushies at the markets must know how to keep the peace when living so closely together. :}

Back in the game store, you'll find a staggering array of media and trinkets for the gamer or anime nerd in your life!

They also had this miniature market storefront toy, which my 5-year-old self would have *loved.*

(Although, frankly, 23-year-old-me liked it quite a lot too.)

Now it's time for a fancy sit-down lunch. Pizza Hut, anyone? :}

Here's a local favorite. Looks good, right? lol

Here's a few more of Pizza Hut's fancy favorites.

Here's a gummy-jelly-lychee-Sprite-ice cream float!

Lunch today is one of my favorites from home: Cheese-y Bite Pizza!

After lunch, we left Kaitlin's neighborhood of Tin Shui Wai and headed to Kowloon, Hong Kong's best shopping and nightlife!

You might recall from the last update that Tarzan's Treehouse is currently undergoing some rehab, complete with scenically appropriate bamboo scaffolding. Come to find out that bamboo scaffolding is standard issue for construction projects all over Hong Kong!

"Please do not throw fireworks at cars."

Streets in Hong Kong were everything I'd hoped for. :}

In addition to the usual jewelry and accessories, the legions of jewelry stores in Hong Kong also sell a wide variety of solid gold figurines. I guess that would explain why Disneyland had so many!

Oooh! This place looks cute! Let's take a look around here...

OH MY GOD IT'S A MINIATURE FERRIS WHEEL

A MINIATURE FERRIS WHEEL THAT PLAYS MUSIC

I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE SO MUCH RIGHT NOW

Oddball nifty-gifty-type stores proved to be quite popular in Hong Kong, like this one, which sells biologically independent Sea Monkey habitats.

Also: centrifugal ash trays, phone cases, and paper flower terrariums. Why bog yourself down with a "theme" of merchandise when you can just sell things that are awesome!?

Then I found a juice bar, where I found a sparkling mandarin-lychee soda drink with fruity gelatin cubes! :}

Any fan of "My Neighbor Totoro" taking this trip would have surely died by now. If it exists, there is a Totoro version of it somewhere in Kowloon.

Now something you certainly don't see every day: a vending machine that sells toys! Hello Kitty play sets, trading cards, and so on. :}

Back into the streets to hit up the next nearest mall!

But there's always places worth stopping to see along the way!
If you're looking for a new phone case, Hong Kong is the place to be.  People around here often switch out phone cases on a daily basis. :}

Candy! :D

Miniatures are definitely a thing.

Therefore, single truffles decorated like cakes or placed into scale replica Pizza Hut boxes are a thing.

Look! It's everyone's favorite European claymation penguin, Pingu! And he's a cell phone charm! <3

"So, what do you wanna call the store?"

"Just Shoppe."

"Just Shoppe…?"

"Yeah, just Shoppe. Nothing else. It'll sound really minimalist and posh."

"Just Shoppe."

"Yes."

"Well, ok. If you say so. I'll go have the sign made tomorrow."

You looking for tin toys? Kowloon's got 'em.

Carousel music boxes? You got it!

Toy Ferris Wheels? Plane rides? Every shape and color.

Yes! Even authentic Bavarian nutcrackers!!

Several of the stores in this particular mall were laid out like this: thousands of mind-numbingly-cute trinkets in roughly the same square footage as a gas station bathroom.

Did I mention they have Totoro?

And Mickey Mouse Platys. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I found some here. :}

*snickers uncontrollably*

Japanese imports are quite common in these malls, with staggering arrays of toys and collectables at good prices, including complete sets of toys originally intended for toy crank machines.

The name of the game here is "everything you never knew you wanted."

Did you know that kitties-and-puppies-in-dessert keychains were a thing?

Now that you do, can you really deny that you kind of need one? lol

Even bulk candy has it's place in Hong Kong!

Idea for a drinking game: drink whenever you walk by a store with something Ferris Wheel-related in it.

More miniatures! These ones here cater to the local fascination with western culture. :}

A miniature fridge! Just what I need to hold my four cans of Coke and my definitely-not-photoshopped dragon fruit.

YEP. MORE CANDY!

I'm a huge fan of anything that is either comically under-sized or comically over-sized. The people over at the Tic-Tac company obviously know what they're doing.

Hong Kong loves Watermelon-flavored drinks, whether it's a bottle of naturally refreshing, no-sugar-added, 100% watermelon juice, or it's this little watermelon-shaped vessel of artificially-flavoured, sour-sweet goodness. :}

Asia isn't just about Hello Kitty and Pokemon; Snoopy fans rejoice!

This is an entire store that is literally 100% Snoopy merchandise. :}

Not in America: Novelty lighters! Candy, cartoons, and tons of other cute things flanking "smoking paraphernalia." And they're for sale at a toy store, no less!

By this point in the evening, I'd bought lots and lots and lots of cute things. And then I stumbled upon this really cute backpack. Obviously it was meant to be!

More Tsum Tsums! They're truly everywhere!

At this point you might be wondering, "is any of this branded merchandise authentic?" As far as Kaitlin and I can tell, the stuff in these nice little boutiques are for sure. Most of it is from Japan (the Disney and Snoopy stuff is from Tokyo Disney and Universal Studios Osaka, respectively). Even the nutcrackers we saw had stamps of authenticity written in German. We even found some scented candles from the United States (which, of course, where probably made in China, shipped to the U.S., and then somehow found their way to Hong Kong. Crazy, right?).

Badass aviator cat clothes hanger is badass.

(Also, there's probably a hanger/hangar joke in there somewhere.)

Also, Häagen Dazs (which is super popular in Hong Kong) now offers ice cream fondue.  I hear it turns everyone into a sexy woman holding a spoon, like the one on the poster to the left.

The streets only became busier as the night went on. While businesses around here often don't open until lunch time, they often stay open until midnight or later!

Animal parts on sticks: a Hong Kong tradition.

"Bill…….strange things are afoot at the Circle K."

Particularly the excessive number of signs.

While Budweiser and other pedestrian beer companies are content with mundane can designs, beer cans around here carry a bit more pizzaz!

Hydration for the final stretch! Red Bull and fruit tea!

This endless midway of fashion and trinkets is Kowloon's famous "Ladies Market!" THIS is where all of the fake stuff is. And it's kind of amazing.
3-D paper greeting cards? Check.

Miniature food keychains and magnets? Check.

Totally authentic Disney merchandise? Check.

Well, my backpack is full! That means it's time to leave before I buy another backpack to put more things in! Yay for an exceedingly-successful shopping adventure in Kowloon! "Western" shopping's got nothing on this.
Time for bed!

Zzzzz…..zzzzz…..zzzzz

*Yawn*

Good morning, everyone! It's day 3 of Hong Kong and we're up early!

Why early, you ask?

To greet the morning dew on the flowers, of course! But they're not just any flowers, mind you...

… they're flowers outside of the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel! Let's have a look-see, shall we?

Ooh! Fancy!

IIIIII'M…….GONNA SWIIIIIIIIING

FROM THE CHANDELIIIIIIIIER……….FROM THE CHANDELIIIIIIIIIER

Inside the courtyard we have Alice's Curious Labyrinth and a lovely view of the South China Sea!

Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel's lobby game is strong.

The hotel's main restaurant was busy with the breakfast rush, but not too busy for a quick photo! :}

Below the lobby of the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is a series of foyers leading to different parts of the hotel. They each have their own unique murals, such as this one of a Mickey and friends courtyard.

The hotel's gift shop carries the same stuff as the Emporium and other in-park gift shops, but here things are presented with some extra glitz. Stained glass Mickey for the win. :}

MORE CHANDELIERS TO SWING FROM!!!

Castle mural #1

Castle mural #2. Can I get one of these in my living room, please?

Ok! Enough hotel stuff. Time for the magical promenade walk to the park!

The walk from the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel to the park makes up about 75% of the promenade, with the remainder making up the route from the travel terminal to the park that we took yesterday.

Hooray! I can't wait to see what magic the day holds!

The space between the marquee and the park is lovely and open, with a handful of fountains dotted along it.

Here's a map. :}

The promenade is expected to be the future home of a Downtown Disney-type expansion, which will probably come about sometime after the resort's third hotel, Explorer's Lodge, opens in 2017.

Hooray! We've made it to the whale! To the left is Disneyland Park. To the right is a freshly-grown island expansion, which will be used for park #2 sometime down the line. :}

Time to line up for opening!

Everyone is on pins and needles waiting to get in! Good thing cast members are around to hand out stickers to the children. :}

Gates are open! Everyone run!!!

(Also, it looks like the Emporium has turned into a pop-up book, just like the castle!)

Wait, where is everyone?!

Pro Tip: Everyone in HK goes STRAIGHT to the Meet & Greet areas at opening. Basically half of the guests don't make it out of Main Street (Mickey, Minnie, and Daisy were immediately swamped), and most of the ones that do go straight to Adventureland or Tomorrowland. Everyone else, including me, went straight to pop-up Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Why?

HIGHLY-COVETED FROZEN MEET & GREET PASSES!

These passes will all be gone before noon. Yes, Frozen is still that much of a thing, over a year after its theatrical release.

After acquiring my Frozen pass, It's time to acquire something in Tomorrowland that's just as important!

Breakfast of Champions!

With breakfast secured, it's time to hop in line for Hong Kong Disneyland's most crowded ride, Autopia!

I don't know if its the ride's slow loading, the popularity of western-style rides, or just the sheer lack of other rides of this type in Asia, but Autopia consistently had 30 minute wait on even the quietest of days!

While all Autopias are relatively similar, I'd wager that this one is the prettiest.

Immediately to the right of Autopia is the construction for Tony Stark's new house. :}

XTREME AUTOPIA POV FABULOUSNESS!

They're not much for leg room around here.

I've never driven an Autopia this lush before! Or, probably any car ride for that matter.

Remember, boys and girls (+ non-gender conformers), Never selfie and drive!

Into the future arch tunnel thingy!

And around the overpass! Everyone wave to Space Mountain!

Though Hong Kong's Autopia is always lovely, and features three unique tracks to explore, operations aren't particularly speedy and the wait becomes tedious after a while.

Traffic jams are also quite frequent, but they give guests time to take pictures. :}

Okay, so here's the deal:

This trip to Hong Kong is actually my Christmas / Graduation / 1-Year Cancer Free gift to myself! In celebration of these events, I decided to bring my graduation cap for photos to go into my graduation announcement! Might as well while I'm here, right? :}

With my cap securely fastened, it's now time to assemble for today's big event!

My Frozen Meet & Greet!

Anna and Elsa are looking radiant. I bet they've really enjoyed the sunny warmth of winter in Hong Kong!

I handed over my camera to one of Disney's stand-by photographers and quickly introduced myself to the girls. :}

"I know I'm meeting you for the first time, but it almost feels like we've met before! If I didn't know any better, I'd think Elsa and I have always known each other!"

;}

I was on the fence about buying Disney's Photo Pass, but after seeing how nice their pictures turned out, I went for it. :}

Flanked with Royalty!

Anna and I got along immediately; we have very similar personalities. :}

And Elsa and I must be kindred spirits! She just looks so very familiar for some reason. :}

After the girls and I said our goodbyes, I was accosted by Tinkerbell!

Tink and I also have a lot in common. She says she loves roller coasters. :}

And THEN I was approached by a local family who wanted my picture with them! So many new friends today! :}

Alright, time to depart from Fantasyland for a while. We'll probably see more of Anna and Elsa later. :}

Next order of business is a selfie with the castle!

Some cast members came by and offered to take one for me. :}

Next I just walked around the park in my cap for a while. I got way more attention than I'd bargained for.

The tradition of having a giant, hovering display of balloons for sale at Disneyland is alive and well in Hong Kong. :}

Mid-day is always a prime time to browse in shops…….if you can tear yourself away from the rides, of course.

The grounds around the hub are quite lovely. There's more room here for landscaping than at Disneyland, but it's not as wide and gaping as the one at WDW.

Look! Pins! Any pin fans? :}

I'm really quite tickled by Donald and Daisy's conflicting reactions to the Mystic Manor.

Obligatory pop-up castle focus shot.

"Wanna hear a secret? Promise not to tell? :}"

Obligatory through-the-gate shot.

The squashed penny sensation has made its way to Hong Kong! However, since Hong Kong doesn't have pennies (or any other coins of an appropriate size), the park instead has "Magic Coin Press" machines, which press a plain, penny-sized disc of copper into a high-polish squashed coin. You can pay with three 5HKD coins, or 15HKD from your MTR card (or "Octopus" cards, as they're called).

When I went to see how Anna and Elsa were doing, their Meet & Greet had just ended and the passes for the day had run out!

No sooner did I check out the Meet & Greet area did Kaitlin appear out of nowhere to ride Space Mountain with me. :}

Then we got some lunch from the Tahitian Terrace! I got delicious Singaporean Stew, featuring deep fried fluffy tofu, shrimp, pork, and noodles in a homemade broth!

Next we rode Grizz, after which I partook in a photo shoot with the magnificent specimen. :}

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars is among Disney's most photogenic attractions.

Like I mentioned previously, the ride's expansive layout is lovingly woven into Grizzly Gulch's midway, providing excellent photo spots of almost the entire ride!

With three or more trains running at all times, getting two trains in a single shot is not merely easy, but anticipatory. :}

Each train dispatch varies by about fifteen seconds (give or take), which means about  3-5 photo opportunities per minute.

Each round of dispatches uniquely staggers the coaster's trains in relation to each other, so almost no two pictures of the ride are alike!

I caught a local bird judging me for my shameless acts of tourism.

As you might've guessed, turnover for this capacity juggernaut is about as high as you could imagine! It's right up there with Europa Park's fleet of crowd-devouring coasters!

With Hong Kong's culture as photo-obsessed as it is, you'll often find people photographing and video-recording from the coasters. I resisted the urge, since I think Disney has a company-wide policy about that sort of thing, but there will be some roller coaster POV craziness later on the trip. :}

Right after Grizzly's launch is where you'll come upon a rare element for Disney coasters: Actual negative Gs!

Speaking of the launch, it's got some nice thrust to it. Probably somewhere along the lines of California Screamin'.

Kaitlin had vanished into thin air shortly after I started my photo session with Grizz. Since I didn't feel like riding Mystic Manor on my own, I skipped it this time.

But not to worry: We'll be back at the Manor on our next visit. :}

Let's pass through Toy Story Land real quick. We've got some more business to attend to near the castle. :}

But first, can we just stop for a second and appreciate the Scrabble letters in the Toy Story Land bathrooms? In both English and Mandarin? Does anyone else wonder what Mandarin Scrabble would be like? There would be a LOT of tiles, that's for sure.

It's 3 o'clock! That means it's time for the first parade of the day!

It's Disney's "Flights of Fantasy" parade, featuring all of Disney's classic high-flying friends!

Both parades include lots of marchers, dancers, floats, and an excellent soundtrack of both classic and original music!

The floats all relate to aviation to some degree. Here's Mickey and Friends' balloon ship.  :}

In the parade is my new friend Christian, whom I met yesterday. :}

Everybody say, "Hi Christian!"

A major benefit to having friends in the parades is unparalleled photo opportunities. :}

Next up is the Winnie the Pooh ensemble, featuring Tigger spring dancers and TWO floats!

" A Heffalump or Woozle is very confusel

A Heffalump or Woozle's very sly

(sly!-SLY!-sly!)

They come in ones and twoosles, but if they so choosels

before your eyes you'll see them multiply!

(ply!-PLY!-ply!)"

Next is a giant swan carrying a flock of princesses,

followed by a Jungle Book / Lion King hybrid float!

Here you can see how the parade wraps around the hub by way of the Tomorrowland/Fantasyland border before continuing down Main Street. :}

It of course couldn't be a flight-oriented parade without Tinkerbell and her crew of Ladybug-wrangling ladies!

Next is the ever-popular Stitch on his highflying Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride!

Flights of Fantasy finishes with a fleet of festive Toy Story friends!

Special recruits from the Toy Soldier Parachute Drop give demonstrations for parade watchers. :}

What a fabulous parade! I loved it! And usually I'm not crazy about parades or shows, but like I said before, exceptions must be made for Disney. :}

We'll be back again next time for clearer and closer (See: better) shots of Flights of Fantasy on our next visit!

No sooner did I head back into Grizzly Gulch did I see a local performance of their very own! Suddenly I feel like I was at Knott's Berry Farm. :}

A mid-afternoon with Grizz means optimum lighting exposure! And that means another photo shoot! :D

By this point in the day, all five (!) trains were running on Big Grizzly Mountain, and that means non-stop photo ops! :D

Five-train operation is achieved by its numerous safety stops (i.e. places on the ride where the train can be safely brought to a halt in the event of an emergency): two in the station, one on each lift hill, one in the launch bay, and two in the final break run!

Woohoo! Dueling Grizzly Mountain!!

The further you are from Grizzly Mountain, the larger it looks in relative size. :}

#forcedperspective

The lift hill gag on this coaster a is lot of fun, particularly because of the reactions of other riders. Every train seems to have at least one person who's completely caught off guard and enters a brief state of panic. >:}

Now it's time to bid Grizz a farewell for the evening and embark on a new Hong Kong adventure!

It's time for a relaxing and leisurely float on Adventureland's jewel of the jungle: the world-famous Jungle (River) Cruise!

While every Jungle Cruise is unique and features an island, only Hong Kong Disneyland's Jungle Cruise island is home to Tarzan's Treehouse!

Get out of here, bird! I don't need your judgement!

Jungle Cruise comes in three languages: English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.  The English-speaking skippers with thick Chinese accents are just a joy, and they're only at Hong Kong Disneyland!

Before we can begin our cruise, we must wait for the Tarzan Treehouse rafts to complete their transit.

Once the raft operators give the go-ahead, our cruise commences! Everyone wave to the rafters!

XTREME JUNGLE (RIVER) CRUISE POV INSANITY W/ BONUS ELEPHANT.

Asian elephant mother + babe say hello. :}

One of the elephants was startled and sprayed our skipper and the control panel with water! The skipper seemed genuinely flustered; I don't think getting soaked is usually part of her job.

No time to dry off! Into the temple ruins!

As we whizzed by on our journey, I locked eyes with an angry crocodile. My life flashed before my eyes, and I swear I could hear him say "I'm coming for your first born son."

Look! I think we're in Africa now.

This is so much funnier to me now than it was when I was a kid. Glad they kept this scene from the original Jungle Cruise.

"We've now entered a village of indigenous people. We must be very quiet, so they don't hear us."

*silence*

*INDISCERNIBLE INDIGENOUS HOWLING AND SCREAMS*

"We've been discovered! Everyone duck!!"

*arrows and blow darts fly overhead*

Look! We're almost home free! The docks are right there!

*CALAMITY*

…wait!? Where'd the dock go?!

Oh snap! There's fire! This Jungle Cruise has fire!

Welp. We've intruded on the local fire and water gods. lolz

Quickly! We must flee through the smoke! Hopefully we won't hit any rocks or hippos!

YAY! We made it! Our reward is this baby elephant. :}

Whew! That sure was exciting. Wasn't this supposed to be leisurely?

What a relief it is to be back on land. :}

Looks like Tinkerbell and Anna are having a conference.

It's twilight in Toy Story Land. :}

I had these grandiose intentions of riding the Toy Soldier Parachute Drop before sundown, but with a 20+ minute single rider line, I decided to skip it.

I went and got some gold nugget merengue instead. It was delicious. :}

Nighttime rides on Grizz are just fabulous. Not quite as much to photograph, but definitely an enhanced riding experience.

Back through Adventureland again!

I love me some string lights. :}

Oooooh! It's almost time for the Paint the Night parade!! Let's see if I can get some decent pictures. Should we stand here?

Or maybe over by Tomorrowland??

Ahh, right in front of the castle. Perfect. :}

The parade has commenced! Here's Tinkerbell leading the way!

Tink is of course backed up by a swarm of fairy dancers.

Here's the super-clever Monsters Inc. float, driven by Sully.

HD LED closet doors are everything.

Here comes Mack with his incredible light show trailer!

The first of the parade's two 5-minute show-stops began just as Mack pulled up to us. He's got a lot to show us!

With Mack comes his entourage of unusual car part-sporting dancers.

Mack's hundreds of LED-filled orbs are a feast for the eyes!

All manner of shapes and patterns move along with the music while the crowd dances!

Of course, everyone has their phones and cameras out, as is customary. :}

Here comes Ariel, who's just thrilled to be Part of Our World!

She, Sebastian, and King Triton bring good tidings from Atlantis!

Here comes Belle! I didn't get a good shot of her entire float this time, but next time we'll be watching from her show stop! She'll be the one to watch for sure, ;}

Belle seems to be the star of the parade, with not one, but two teams of dancers at her beck and call! Another benefit to the show stops is actually getting clear shots of the dancers, who often move too quickly for clear shots.

I know it's hard to tell, but we've got some yo-yo-wielding cowgirls coming our way now! You know what that means!

It's the Toy Story float, featuring a spectacular giant Slinky Dog!!

Woody saw me in my Buzz outfit and gave me a salute. The real Buzz, meanwhile, was too busy waving at people from Slinky's butt to notice. ;}

The finale of the Paint the Night parade is the Sorcerer's Apprentice himself, Mickey Mouse!

He is a pain in the butt to photograph. His giant, atomic-looking energy thing is quite the sight to see, though!

*FRUSTRATION*

No worries. Next time I'll have better shots for sure! Tonight I learned that it's no small feat to capture everything in parade on your first try. I can guarantee you, though, that by the end of this report, you'll know both of Hong Kong Disneyland's parades forward and backward!

Goodnight Hong Kong Disneyland! Kaitlin and I will be back again before you know it!

Now it's time for some chow!

When Kaitlin first came to Hong Kong, she stayed here in Hollywood Hotel. The Studio Lounge quickly became one of her favorite restaurants!

And with couch seating, drink specials, and nightly showings of Disney classic movies, I can see why!

One of tonight's specials is the (nonalcoholic) "Elsa!"

Other drinks included fresh watermelon juice and the house cabernet (?).

The wonton soup was everything, obviously.
Hoo! Was that a long and crazy two days or what?! I hope yinz enjoyed some Hong Kong culture along with your Disneyland goodness!

Our Fabulous Far East adventure is only begun! Tomorrow we take off for some new territory for both myself and Kaitlin: Taiwan! Are you ready for some crazy-happy times with two great B&M coasters at Janfusun Fancyworld?!!? Join us next time as we embark on this exciting adventure!!!
